Learning Evaluation in Colorado Springs: School vs. Private Testing

The school says to wait and watch. A worried relative says get it checked out now. A quick online search turns up different types of testing, each with its own price tag. Where you get a learning evaluation in Colorado Springs comes down to two real options: a free evaluation through your school district, or a private learning assessment you schedule yourself. Which one fits depends on timing, depth, and what you’re trying to find out.

Who Can Request a Learning or Educational Evaluation?

A parent can request one directly, with no referral required at all. A teacher can flag a pattern during a parent-teacher conference. A pediatrician can note it at a routine checkup. Learning disabilities aren’t always obvious in toddlers and tend to surface once academic demands increase, often between kindergarten and third grade for reading, later for math and written expression. There’s no single “right age” to request an evaluation.

School Evaluation or Private Testing?

Public school districts in El Paso County, including District 11, Academy District 20, and Widefield, have Child Find obligations to identify and evaluate students who may have qualifying disabilities. After you sign consent, federal law generally requires the evaluation to be completed within 60 days. That evaluation focuses on whether the student qualifies for school-based services and what educational support may be needed. Private learning evaluations, like the ones we conduct at Central Focus Psychological Group, may offer faster scheduling and a broader look beyond school eligibility alone. Families choose the private route when they want answers before the school year gets further along, when a first school evaluation left questions unanswered, or when they want documentation covering SAT, ACT, or college testing accommodations.

Screening vs. Full Evaluation: What’s the Difference?

Learning disability screening is a short check, usually a questionnaire or classroom tool, used to determine whether a fuller evaluation may be warranted. It can identify signs of risk without diagnosing the cause, and it isn’t enough on its own to qualify a child for accommodation. A full evaluation pairs cognitive testing with academic achievement testing, pinpointing the exact skill gap behind the struggle, whether that’s decoding, written expression, or math reasoning.

What Does a Learning Evaluation Cost in Colorado Springs?

Cost is often the deciding factor between the two paths, more than report quality. Under federal law, the school-based route carries no direct cost to families, regardless of insurance. Private evaluation costs depend on insurance coverage, your deductible, whether Central Focus is in-network for your plan, and the testing involved. Self-pay costs can also vary based on the scope of the evaluation. The best way to get an accurate estimate is to call before scheduling and ask what your evaluation is expected to include.
