Adult ADHD Evaluation in Colorado Springs: How It Works

You finally booked the visit at 38, and the intake paperwork asks how you behaved in third grade. That question catches many adults off guard, yet childhood history is central to an adult ADHD evaluation in Colorado Springs. Clinicians look for evidence of symptoms before age 12, using your recollections, available records, and ADHD testing to develop a fuller picture. For adults across El Paso County who were never diagnosed as children, including women whose symptoms went unnoticed in school, those early experiences matter.

Why Does an Adult ADHD Diagnosis Require Childhood Symptoms?

ADHD is a developmental condition, so an adult diagnosis requires evidence that several symptoms were present before age 12. The DSM-5 raised that onset threshold from age 7 in 2013. Adults must also show at least five qualifying symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity, with symptoms affecting daily functioning in multiple settings, such as home and work.

What Should You Bring to an Adult ADHD Evaluation?

Old report cards can be particularly useful because teacher comments describe childhood behavior. Notes like “needs to check work” or “talks during lessons” may reveal patterns that grades alone miss. Transcripts, previous assessment results, and IEP or 504 plan paperwork can provide additional context.

A parent or older sibling may also describe your childhood behavior through a questionnaire. Completing our Client History form before your appointment helps your clinician review that background.

Can You Get an ADHD Diagnosis Without Childhood Records?

Yes. Childhood records can help, but they’re not always necessary for an adult ADHD diagnosis. When documents or family accounts are unavailable, clinicians can consider your recollections alongside other assessment findings. Before your visit, write down specific examples, like homework you completed but never turned in.

Military families may have attended schools in several districts. If you grew up moving between installations before settling near Fort Carson or Peterson Space Force Base, start by contacting your former schools about available records. Gathering what you can before your ADHD evaluation in Colorado Springs may help your clinician understand your childhood history.

Is It ADHD, Anxiety, or Poor Sleep?

Sleep problems, anxiety, and depression can mimic ADHD or occur alongside it. Sleep difficulties affect up to 70% of adults with ADHD, making it important to examine symptoms in context.

Timing offers useful clues. Attention difficulties dating back to childhood may support an ADHD diagnosis, while problems that developed after a major life change call for a broader assessment. Psychological testing of working memory, processing speed, and executive functioning can provide additional information about cognitive strengths and challenges, but no single test establishes ADHD.

Schedule an Adult ADHD Evaluation in Colorado Springs

The length and cost of an evaluation depend on the scope of testing and your insurance coverage. Some assessments take one appointment, while more comprehensive evaluations may involve several visits and a feedback session to discuss the written report.

An evaluation can help clarify whether ADHD or another condition explains your symptoms and provide recommendations that may inform workplace accommodation requests. Our licensed psychologists conduct diagnostic assessments for adults throughout the Pikes Peak region. Our Colorado Springs office also welcomes clients from Monument, Falcon, and Black Forest.

Pull those old report cards from the closet, then contact our team to discuss scheduling an evaluation and what to bring.
