During a mental health evaluation, we gather information to understand the way a person feels, reasons, thinks, and remembers. Through questions and physical tests, an individual’s mental health needs and treatment plan will be determined.

What should I expect during a mental health evaluation?

The professional will first determine if the person seeking help is a danger to themselves or others, evaluating the need for immediate help or psychiatric intervention. The professional will then ask for permission to obtain medical records from other providers to review past medical history. They will also ask permission to discuss treatment with spouses and/or other family members. Next, the professional will conduct various techniques, which may include written questionnaires and interviews. Common topics covered during this evaluation include symptoms, family history, medication list, and any other substance use.
